Welcome to my website!

Hello! I'm Debra Penberthy, an American singer-songwriter and pianist who just relocated from Pasadena, CA to North Carolina.  I love rivers and rain, and so does my dog, Matty Willow! My music speaks to the heart and mind.  I take the craft of songwriting seriously, and I put on live shows that are captivating and moving. My debut EP will be out soon, and recently I premiered my solo rock musical called Serious Rabbit, a ten-year labor of love that I wrote, produced, and performed.  Join my mailing list for updates, come out and see a live show, and be on the look out for the release of my EP soon!   I formerly used the stage name Cicada Road, so you will see this name referred to throughout my site.

EP is Becoming a Visual Album!

"Dream of Peace" released and more videos coming!

My wonderful friend, Sam Keeble, and I have been making music videos for all of the tracks on my forthcoming album.  We've trekked across America by car twice, this last time while I moved from California to North Carolina--with my precious dog along for the ride, and Sam's captured beautiful footage everywhere we've gone.  Most of the videos are yet to be released.  The video for "Dream of Peace," was released a while back.  Check it out here, and let me know if you're looking for an amazing videographer!

Please hit the Share Button to share this video on Facebook and Twitter, and please hit the "like" button!  This all helps when booking gigs and getting the word out. Thank you!

My Rock Musical "Serious Rabbit" Premieres Soon!

If you've known me for a while, you know I've been kicking around the idea of a solo musical starring a very serious rabbit for many years. Well, it's happening!  I am coming to the end of a solo performance masterclass in which I've been  writing and  workshopping my material, and I'm 90% done! Will be 100% soon.

Serious Rabbit: One Bunny's Search for Meaning  features me as Clover, a professor of feminist rabbit studies who wants to be a hero.   Told through ten original songs propelled by monologues, it's the story of what happens when Clover realizes she can't save everyone and has to find a way to save herself.  People tell me the songs remind them of Sondheim combined with Tori Amos (not too shabby)!

I'll be doing some of the songs at my May 31 gig at The Factory in Pasadena (see info to the right on this page).   To see the whole  labour of love in an actual theater, come out on June 27, 2015 at 3pm to Beyond Baroque in Venice.  It's about 70 minutes long, and it will be followed by a talk-back sessions where you can give me your feedback and be part of the development of this piece.

See my events page for full details. Hope to see you there!
